On little breaks

Every morning and evening I get to take a break from regular life and take our dog Hank for a walk.

Some days it’s easy, some days it’s a bit harder. Sometimes every blade of grass requires a sniff. Sometimes it’s all about the destination. Sometimes it’s about the escape.

On our evening walks I’ve seen some incredible sights. Couple of ospreys fishing. Great Blue Heron at 30 paces. Lightning unzipping the clouds on the horizon. Train drowning out thunder. Unbridled joy of a good chase.

Taking some time to quiet my thoughts. Enjoying a fresh cup of coffee. Getting a mini vacation.

NFL Football

I’m sitting here, watching the preseason game between the Houston Texans and the New York Jets. Finally.

Every year, I go through a long off-season of waiting for games. Because of the labour uncertainty, this year seemed longer. I had a bad feeling about whether or not the season would start on time. I’m glad they got it done when they did, but I’m worried, with a new Defensive Coordinator for the Texans, that there hasn’t been enough time to prepare, and I’m guessing that that uncertainty is as much a reason for the Texans giving Kubiak another shot as their hopes that he could still take them to the playoffs.

Time’s up, though, Kube. Playoffs or bust.

The defense should be better. I don’t know how it could be worse. They’ve switched alignment to a 3-4 to, hopefully, maximize the damage that Mario Williams can do rushing the passer. They dedicated a whole pile of draft picks, including the first four or five to defense. J. J. Watt should come right in and play well. I’m a little uncertain about Brooks Reed, but he’s well-regarded.

Offense, once everyone’s healthy, should be good to go. Schaub, Johnson, and Foster all return. I’m a little concerned with Vonta Leach leaving for Baltimore, but I still think the run game can be productive, especially since, with Andre Johnson in the game, you have to respect the pass in every situation.

I’m ready. They’re ready. All that remains is a month of preseason that will probably feel like a year.

Go Texans!

One of the things that I miss the most since almost all of my friends have gone off to parenthood land is the weekend coffee get-together. I understand that the responsibility is a big one - especially when the kids are very young - but I also know that you guys (and by "guys" I mean all of you) miss it too. Cliff, Kelly and I manage to go for coffee every two to three weeks, but I think I'm safe when I say that they could make it more often.

So I have a proposal: make it a weekly thing. Pick the day and the time, and from then on just know that when the time comes there will be greazy food and inappropriate conversation waiting for you.

I don't know if this idea will work, I'd just like to give it a try.
